Polar Bears May Join Endangered Species List |
Pointing to "substantial scientific and commercial information" indicating that polar bear habitats are threatened by increasing global temperatures, a federal agency yesterday announced that it is reviewing the status of the bears and considering listing them as "threatened." The US Fish and Wildlife Service announcement comes as the agency faces a lawsuit over failing to respond to petitions on the issue filed last year by three environmental groups. full story |

India: Police Investigate Death of Coca-Cola Bottling Plant Opponent |
A Coca-Cola franchise co. in India is the subject of a police inquiry into the death of a community leader who had publicly objected to a planned Coca-Cola bottling plant in the village where he chaired the local council. On 1/30, Justice P. Murgesen directed the Supt. of Police to register a case into the suspicious death of V. Kamsan. The judge further directed the Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Dept. to conduct an investigation into Kamsan's death 8/30/05. full story |

Thousands of Firms Could Stop Reporting Emissions |
Thousands of companies throughout the nation would no longer have to provide the public with details of toxic chemicals they release into the environment under a Bush proposal to streamline the nation's environmental right-to-know law. For nearly 20 years, the national Toxics Release Inventory has allowed people to access detailed data about chemicals that are used and released in their neighborhoods. full story |
