Deforestation Blamed For Landslides
In LeyteSevere deforestation, days
of rain and mountainous terrain triggered landslides that crashed down on several towns in Leyte at the weekend, burying entire villages, an expert said. Around 200 people
were dead or missing after tons of mud slammed into villages near the remote towns of Liloan, Maasin and San Francisco in southern Leyte, and on the northeastern part of Mindanao island, rescuers said.  full story


Ocean Salinity Called Sign of
Global Warming
Signs that global warming is changing patterns of rain, snow and ocean currents that drive the climate system were reported yesterday by scientists monitoring ocean saltiness. According to
oceanographer Ruth Curry, sea surface waters in tropical regions have become significantly saltier in the past 50 years, while surface waters at high latitudes in Arctic regions have become much fresher.  full story


Giant Wind Farms Planned off U.K. Coast
Energy companies plan to place more than 1,000 turbines off England’s coastline in a $12.4 billion project that will create the world’s largest source of wind energy, the government said Thursday. The
wind farms, preliminary approval on Thursday, would generate as much as 7 gigawatts of electricity.  full story

Strong Stand on Global Warming
One of the world's largest scientific organizations issued a strongly- worded statement December 16, that human activities are increasingly altering the Earth's climate. The new policy shows a deepening concern
over rising greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. "Scientists are in general a conservative bunch," she said. "And to get the AGU council and this panel to agree unanimously that humans are changing climate, that in itself is significant."  full story

'Ignoring Ban On Ivory Trade'
The three nations - which have nearly wiped out their elephant populations, have virtually ignored a world ban on the ivory trade and their flourishing illegal markets are "driving elephant poaching" in West and Central
Africa, according to a report released yesterday by Traffic, an organisation which monitors trade in endangered species, and the World-Wide Fund for Nature.  full story

An estimated one-tenth of the country is experiencing the driest year on record, agricultural meteorologist Johan van den Berg from Enviro Vision said on Monday. Official records, kept since 1915, showed
that during the past 11 months several parts of South Africa had the least rain in 88 years, he said here.  full story
