EPA's Latest Human Pesticide Testing Rule
Called Illegal, Immoral
Three U.S. legislators are asking the U.S. EPA to withdraw a planned rule to permit pesticide experimentation on humans, including pregnant and nursing mothers and children. Monday, California legislators Senator Barbara Boxer, and Representatives Henry Waxman and Hilda Solis released details of the rule and called on EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson to withdraw the rule, calling it a "profound moral and ethical breach."  full story
World Health Agency Says Disasters of 2005
Not Entirely Natural
The high death toll in 2005 from tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons, mudslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, locusts and pandemics can not be blamed entirely on natural disaster, the UN health agency has said. Human activities such as deforestation and CO2 emission also play a part. WHO blames global warming influenced by human behavior, socioeconomic factors causing poorer people to live in risky areas, and inadequate disaster preparedness and education on the part of govts as well as the general population for last year's high death toll.  full story

Magnify East African Drought
The relentless drought across East Africa is deepening because of global climate change as well as the continuing destruction of forests, grasslands, wetlands and other critical ecosystems, the UN Environment Programme is warning. Rainfall over the past year has been poor and the recent rainy season of October to December 2005 has been dismal, according to the Kenyan Meteorological Services. Kenya is one of four drought-striken countries that are the focus of concern.  full story
