Dissent Is Patriotic
The Bill of Rights Defense Committee's Action Alert
December 11, 2002
Bill of Rights Day, December 15
On December 15 the Bill of Rights Defense Committee will celebrate the 65 Bill of Rights Defense Committees and the thousands of people across the United States who are defending the rights and liberties set forth in the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Some local committees are organizing events on or near that day. In California, Nevada County is planning a demonstration, and Sebastopol's resolution declares December 15 "Bill of Rights Day" in the city. In North Carolina, the Orange County and Wake County Bill of Rights Defense Committees will be joining the ACLU for the annual reading of the Bill of Rights in front of the Chapel Hill Post Office, where they will also hold signs and host an information table.
Here are a few more suggestions for observing Bill of Rights Day:
Suggest to social studies teachers that on December 13 their classes read the first 10 amendments of the Bill of Rights and discuss their history and importance and the recent threats to the rights they protect.
Write a letter to the editor, or record a commentary for your local radio station to air. Mention the growing grassroots movement to restore the rights and liberties threatened and diminished by the USA PATRIOT Act, several executive orders, and the recently passed Homeland Security Act.
Start a Bill of Rights Defense Committee in your community, school, union, or religious organization.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens
can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever
has.
